A new power plant waiting to connect and a large data center asking for electricity are different problems. A generator wants to inject power. A data center wants the grid to deliver power. Faster studies do not build transformers. The rest of this page is the longer version. You do not need it to follow the homepage.
Longer note · curiosity over prophecy
Generation queues are not load questions
Short on the channel: Generation queues ≠ load queues.
established hypothesis open
A headline can say “the interconnection queue” and still be about two different objects. One is new supply waiting to inject. The other is a large new load asking whether the system can take it. Mixing them makes study reform sound like it answers energization. It does not.
Two questions
established A generation interconnection queue is the study-and-agreement path for projects that want to inject — generators, and often storage treated as supply. The applicant, the study object, and the agreement are about power flowing onto the system.
established A large-load question is different: whether a system can absorb a new withdrawal — a data center, a plant, some other big customer — and what upgrades, tariffs, or local limits that requires. Same grid. Not the same form, and not automatically the same desk.
hypothesis Public talk sometimes treats generator-queue reform as if it were the answer to large-load absorption. That proxy is what this note is suspicious of. It is a reading of the conversation, not a count of headlines.
open How cleanly any given region, utility, or tariff actually separates the two. Projects can still share a substation, a transformer, or a calendar. Sharing equipment is not the same as sharing a question. This page does not survey tariffs.
Faster studies, same steel
established A faster study can shorten time spent in models, restudies, and waiting on analysis. When the study is on the critical path, that help is real.
established A study does not manufacture a transformer, structural steel, conductor, or a crew to install them. Speeding the paper does not put those things in the yard.
hypothesis Where equipment or labor is what actually binds, study-speed reform moves the paper clock and leaves the physical clock. Where the study itself binds, speed matters more. Which one binds is local. This note does not assign a national bottleneck, and it does not claim a shortage.
open For a specific project, which clock is binding: study, permit, equipment, crew, contract, or headroom that is already energized.
Software time, physical clocks
established Software moved onto machines that already have power does not, by itself, need a new interconnection. A release, a deployment, a shift of work onto a site that is already energized — those can run on a software calendar.
established Energizing a site that is not yet served still waits on physical work and permission: construction, permits, and whatever agreement the local rules require. The sequence differs by place. The software calendar does not replace it.
hypothesis AI demand can scale on software time where spare energized capacity already exists. “Can” is the claim. Not “will.” Not a date. Not a prediction that the grid fails, or that it will not.
open How much near-term AI load is reallocation onto sites that are already energized, and how much is new energization. No megawatts and no timetable on this page.
What would make this wrong
- Wrong if “not the same question” is read as “load interconnection is easy,” or as “generator-queue reform is pointless.” Both clocks can matter. They are still two clocks.
- Wrong if a reader takes this as a forecast of shortage, surplus, blackout, or a year when “AI runs out of power.”
- Wrong if faster studies are dismissed. They help. They are not steel, and they are not nothing.
- Wrong if “software time” is treated as proof that new load never needs wires. It describes work that already has watts.
That humility beat is the one EXPLORE marks as what could make a frame wrong. Beat 02 on that page is what is already true. This note tries to stay inside that pair — curiosity, not prophecy.
Locate, and a different queue
On Power as a Primitive, Locate asks where power can be had, under interconnection and market rules. This note is a narrower cut of that verb: which queue the sentence is about, before anyone talks about a machine that acquires power. The longer claim-labeled draft is the Power essay.
The Electronic Governor keeps another queue entirely: exceptions a desk still has to see when an automated loop cannot finish — a limit, a stale feed, a schedule that no longer reconciles. That is not a generation interconnection queue. Sharing the word “queue” is not sharing the object. established as a distinction inside this exhibition, not as a grid-operations finding.
Where criticism belongs
If a region really does run supply and large load through one proceeding, or if a study is the only thing on the critical path, that is the correction. Pushback preferred over applause. There is no comment box, membership, or mailing list on this note. Research intake is not open.
