Nameplate ≠ reliability credit
Short on the channel: Nameplate ≠ reliability credit.
current hypothesis open
A 100 MW battery next to a 100 MW load is not “200 MW of something” on a spreadsheet. Those figures are an illustration of sticker arithmetic, not a site this exhibition measured. Reliability contribution of co-located resources is not the sum of nameplates. The companion cut — flex beside a load is not free firm capacity — is flexibility is not free capacity. This page stays on the next sentence: the sticker on the one-line is not the credit under stress.
Sticker vs stress
current What the one-line diagram lists is a sticker: nameplate on the battery, the generator, the load. What the system can count on under stress is a different number. A reliability credit, as a planning idea, is that second question — contribution when the system is tight — not the labels added up. That the idea exists is the claim. This page does not compute a credit, does not survey regions, and does not describe a rule this exhibition designed.
hypothesis Talk about co-located load, storage, and generation sometimes adds those stickers and treats the sum as one reliability number. The 100 MW beside 100 MW line above is the shape of that mistake. “Sometimes” is the claim. It is a reading of the conversation, not a count of headlines, and not a finding that every sentence does it.
Portfolio interaction
hypothesis Portfolios interact. A battery, a load, and on-site generation do not show up as three independent nameplates the system can add. Scarcity hours matter for what can be counted on: being present on an ordinary afternoon is not the same as being the contribution that holds when the lights are tight. This note did not measure those hours. It names no credit, no region, and no clearing result.
current Reliability contribution of co-located resources is not the sum of nameplates. Adding stickers is a different operation from asking what holds under stress. How often the conversation makes the first move stays the hypothesis above. The cut is not “storage never helps.” A buffer can still change a site. It does not turn two stickers into one accredited total.
On Power as a Primitive, Store already says buffers change response speed and do not erase the system. The flexibility note points that sentence at interconnection: flex is not free firm capacity. This note points the same caution at the spreadsheet. Which queue a sentence is about stays on generation versus load. Those companions are already on the exhibition. They are not a measurement of a credit, and this page does not retag them as one.
What stays open
open How a large-load portfolio gets valued — a data center described with on-site storage and generation, or any other co-located set. Which hours count as scarce. What is actually accredited when the lights are tight. Whether public talk stays on nameplate or asks for that second number. Those stay open because they are local, and because this page did not run the study.
open Watching for the accredited number is not the same as having computed one. No timetable sits under the hypothesis. No forecast of surplus, shortage, or a year when a portfolio credit is settled. Curiosity over prophecy includes leaving the number blank.
What would make this wrong
- Wrong if nameplates added up are read as accredited firm contribution under scarcity.
- Wrong if this page is read as an ELCC study or an ISO statistic.
- Wrong if “watch the accredited number” is read as this exhibition having computed one, or as this exhibition having designed the accreditation rules.
- Wrong if storage is dismissed as never helping adequacy. The cut is sticker versus stress credit, not “flex is useless.”
- Wrong if the page is read as a finding that batteries solve adequacy. It does not say that.
That humility beat is the one EXPLORE marks as what could make a frame wrong. Beat 02 on that page is what is already true. This note tries to stay inside that pair — curiosity, not prophecy.
Locate, under stress
On Power as a Primitive, Locate asks where power can be had, under interconnection and market rules. Price asks “how scarcity and location already govern behavior” — the question already on that page, not a number computed here. This note is a narrower cut beside the flexibility note and the generation-versus-load note: once resources share a site, do not add the nameplates and call the sum what the system can count on. The longer claim-labeled draft is the Power essay.
Not a forecast. Not a product. Curiosity over prophecy.
Where criticism belongs
If the accredited contribution of a portfolio really is the sum of its nameplates, or if scarcity hours do not change what can be counted on, that is the correction. Pushback preferred over applause. There is no comment box, membership, or mailing list on this note. Research intake is not open.
