Physics still vetoes
Short on the channel: Physics still vetoes.
established current hypothesis open
A profitable plan can still trip. Automation proposes; protection and physics can cancel. A schedule, a price, or an optimizer’s preferred move is not the same sentence as delivery. This page stays on that cut. It does not count trips, name a control room, or forecast who wins.
Propose ≠ cleared
established current Automation, and price or schedule intent, may propose a plan. Physics and protection can cancel it. That is established as current ops and exhibition framing — the same Optimize line already on Power as a Primitive. “Optimized,” “scheduled,” and “priced” describe intent. They do not, by themselves, describe a plan that ran. This note did not measure a fleet. It names no region, no megawatts, and no trip count.
Where the veto lives
established Economic intent meets kinematics, safety envelopes, and protective relays. Ordinary practice, restated: a plan can look profitable and still be the plan a limit, a relay, or the motion of the machine will not allow. The same sentence is already exhibition framing on the Power essay and the robot-bill note. Schematic only — words for where a veto can live. Not a control-room screen, and not a procedure copied from a desk.
hypothesis Autonomy that ignores the veto is not sophistication — it is a contingency waiting to happen. “Waiting” is the claim. Not a date. Not a named outage. Not a prophecy that the contingency arrives.
When protection overrides a cleared award
established current In PJM, if a Market Participant’s real-time energy purchases or sales deviate from the amounts scheduled in the Day-ahead Energy Market, that participant is obligated to purchase or sell energy for the amount of the deviations at the applicable Real-time Prices or price differences, unless the Schedule says otherwise. That is PJM Operating Agreement Schedule 1 §1.10.1(c)(i) (same text in the Tariff Attachment K Appendix §1.10 redline published for MRC 2025-09-25). Read plainly: when local protection stops delivery after the day-ahead schedule cleared, the imbalance is settled at real-time price against the participant — not absorbed as a free market gift. This note does not invent megawatts, trip counts, or a claim that Meridian replaces PJM settlement.
open Parallel imbalance rules in other ISO/RTO markets are not verified on this page. CAISO and ERCOT cells stay open.
Storage buffers; it does not abolish the grid
established Storage buffers autonomy. It does not abolish the grid, and it does not erase protection. Established as SoE ops intuition in exhibition copy — not a peer-reviewed finding claimed here. On Power as a Primitive, Store already says buffers change response speed and do not erase the system. The companion flexibility note points a related caution at interconnection: flex is not free firm capacity. This page stays on the veto. A buffer can change how fast a site answers. It does not retire the question of whether the plan is allowed to run.
hypothesis Intelligence that cannot respect vetoes on power is more exposed, not more autonomous. The Power essay states a wider line — locate, price, acquire, store, or respect vetoes — as the exhibition’s philosophical posture, not proven metaphysics. This note keeps the narrower cut, and labels it hypothesis. Curiosity over prophecy.
What stays open
open When physics vetoes a profitable plan, what the desk should keep visible. The Electronic Governor already names the texture of that question: a limit, a stale feed, a schedule that no longer reconciles. What a given desk actually keeps in view — and who may pause, override, or reject — stays open. This page will not fill in a procedure. Acknowledge, hold, and log on that page are exhibition texture, not a copied control-room screen.
No timetable sits under the hypothesis. No forecast of a trip, a surplus, or a year when protection becomes optional. Curiosity over prophecy includes leaving the desk’s list local.
What would make this wrong
hypothesis Humility, not a new measurement. The frame breaks if a reader treats the sentences above as destiny, or as proof a plan ran.
- Wrong if “AI optimized the dispatch” is read as proof the plan ran. Optimized is intent. Running is a different sentence.
- Wrong if the veto is sold as optional, or as something a more sophisticated optimizer can retire.
- Wrong if “more exposed” is read as destiny — a slogan that physics always prevails, or that automation always prevails. Neither slogan is a claim on this page.
- Wrong if “storage buffers” is read as “storage never helps,” or as “the grid has been abolished.” The intuition says a buffer changes response. It does not erase protection.
- Wrong if the contingency hypothesis is read as a dated prediction. It names a failure mode of ignoring the veto. It does not schedule one.
- Wrong if a reader takes a megawatt, a market statistic, a trip count, or a control-room screen from this page. None are stated.
- Wrong if §1.10.1(c)(i) is read as “the battery always buys back at LMP” without naming the Market Participant and the day-ahead-to-real-time deviation. The cited sentence is about participants that deviate from day-ahead scheduled amounts.
- Wrong if Grok’s earlier §1.10.1A(d) cite is repeated here. That subsection is day-ahead offer submission, not the deviation settlement rule.
That humility beat is the one EXPLORE marks as what could make a frame wrong. Beat 02 on that page is what is already true. This note tries to stay inside that pair — curiosity, not prophecy.
Optimize, before the machine
On Power as a Primitive, Optimize already says automation proposes and physics and protection still veto. Physics as veto names profitable plans that protection still cancels. This note is that pair, written out. The longer claim-labeled draft is the Power essay. Which clock a sentence is about stays on generation versus load. Nothing here is a product you can join.
Not a forecast. Not a product. Curiosity over prophecy.

Where criticism belongs
If a price or a schedule on a given desk really is the same sentence as delivery, or if protection there is optional, that is the correction. Pushback preferred over applause. There is no comment box, membership, or mailing list on this note. Research intake is not open.
